RV Slide-Out Maintenance

Slide Out Maintenance
RV Slide Out Maintenance

If your RV is equipped with a slide-out room, it is an infuriating inconvenience when it fails to work. There are several types of RV slide-out systems including hand crank, cable systems, hydraulic systems, and electric motor operated systems. While the automatic systems are much more convenient, all RV manufacturers are required to provide a means to retract the slide-out room by hand in the event of power or battery failure.

At a minimum, we recommend an annual inspection to maintain hassle-free operation and prolong the life of your slide-out. Routine inspections should be done to make sure that everything is functioning properly and all the pieces are in good condition. Routine lubrication of the seals and slide mechanism will keep things moving smoothly for years without rust or corrosion. The slide-out inspection should include the seals that keep weather and pests out and the warm or cool air in. Slide-out seal treatment protects seals from wear and damage from sun, road splatter, and other pollutants.

RV Slide-Out Service

A gear-driven RV slide-out requires more periodic maintenance than other types of slide-outs because although they are less expensive and complicated than other types, they have more moving parts. An electric slide-out motor uses a series of pumps, hydraulic hoses, control valves, and rams and cylinders. These systems are under high pressure and should, therefore, only be repaired by professional RV service shops.

Types of RV Slide-Outs

There are three main types of RV slide-outs, and each one of these operates in a slightly different way and requires individualized attention. Regardless of the slide-out you choose, however, you can rest assured that you've made a great choice that will significantly increase your square footage and leg room - without adding any significant weight.

The three main types of RV slide-outs are classified by the manner in which they operate. Thus, they are categorized as follows:

  • Electric Slide-Out: The most common type of slide-out the electric variety triggers the ejection of the slide out with the simple push of a button or the flip of a switch.
  • Hydraulic Slide-Out: With the use of a hydraulic pump, your slide-out is disengaged and released. This style is typically emblematic of larger capacity motorhomes.
  • Tip-Out Style: Typically found in older RV models, this slide-out doesn't slide so much as it tips out of the side of the vehicle, much like those wall-beds you see in movies from the 80s.

Maintenance for Your RV Slide-Out

Like any vehicle, proper lubrication is a must for regular maintenance. Mechanics recommend the use of a dry silicone spray or a dry lube protectant for most slide-outs, but you should check your manufacturer's guide to confirm that using such products will be safe for the vehicle's bearings.

Oil aside, one of the most common problems with RV slide-outs involve the rubber coating that acts as a buffer. With regular use, this rubber barrier weakens due to wear and tear, potentially leading to troublesome issues with water and leaking. To slow down the deterioration process, you should treat the rubber with a seal conditioner, as this will diminish the likelihood of cracks and fades. Eventually, however, some parts simply need to be replaced. If you can't purchase a replacement rubber seal immediately, a roll of sealant tape should do the trick in the interim.
