1. Slide Outs
Some travel trailer models have slide outs, which makes the interior feel more spacious. However, slide outs require additional maintenance! You should routinely check the seals for signs of weakness or leaks so you can reinforce them with sealant as needed. You’ll also need to oil the mechanism and monitor the electronics associated with the slide outs.
2. Tires
Travel trailer tires are extremely important for both safety and transportation. You want to regularly check the air pressure and condition of the tread before you go on any road trips! The right air pressure will help the tires wear evenly and reduce the chance of an accident.
You should also maintain the tires of your tow vehicle. You’ll need to check the pressure and condition of those tires before your next trip as well. Remember to refer to the owner’s manual to determine the proper amount of pressure.
3. Tanks and Tanks
Like all RVs, travel trailers have black water and greywater tanks. It’s extremely important to take good care of your tanks! The proper maintenance will prevent buildup that can cause unpleasant odors. You can use manufacturer-recommended solvents to keep the tanks free of debris. A few times a year you may need to go a step further and powerwash each tank as well.
When you care for your tanks, you should simultaneously maintain the hoses! Make sure all materials have completely passed through the hose and try to allow them to dry before you store them. You can disconnect them from the tanks and hose them out into the sewer connection for better care.
4. Electrical
There are also many electrical components that you need to maintain in your travel trailer, too. From kitchen appliances to electric mechanisms like the slideouts, you want to keep a close eye on functionality and care.
You should regularly check electrical wiring, connections, and the condition of electrical components. Make sure you know where the travel trailer’s electrical panel is located and have a general idea of what each fuse is for. It’s also critical to understand the electrical load limits of your travel trailer and follow them closely.
